What we collect, why, and your choices

A short guide to the policy below. The full policy governs; where this summary is brief, the policy has the detail.

When you read

We record the pages and stories you read and the searches and tools you use, with technical details such as your browser, device and network address. A cookie recognizes your browser between visits. We store exact network addresses encrypted and remove them from our records after 24 months; hosting and security logs follow their own schedules.

When you click an email link

Links in our emails are personal to each recipient, so we can tell which edition and story were opened. Email security software sometimes opens links automatically, and we work to tell those visits apart from yours.

When you sign in or subscribe

We keep your name, email address and the professional details you share, such as employer and role, and connect your reading to your account. A sign-in lasts up to 30 days. If you sign in with LinkedIn, we receive the profile details LinkedIn shares.

From other sources

We also use professional information from public sources, such as regulatory filings and company websites, and from business contact lists we are authorized to use to introduce our publications. That is how some readers first receive a briefing.

Why

To deliver the editions and features you ask for, to personalize what we show you, and to improve our coverage.

We also study which topics, firms and markets professionals are reading about. Contact, professional and interest information may be shared within our corporate family for business intelligence and marketing, as the policy below explains, and you can opt out of that on Privacy choices. We do not sell personal information for money.

Your choices
