AM Best drops Farm Bureau P&C's negative outlook

The group's A (Excellent) ratings stand as the downgrade warning is retired.

At a glance

  1. The agency on Sept. 9 revised the group's outlooks to stable from negative and affirmed its A (Excellent) financial strength rating and “a” (Excellent) long-term issuer credit ratings, an action that covers members of the group.
  2. Stable after negative is not an upgrade; it is a change in the forward assumption.
  3. Farm Bureau P&C keeps its A and loses the asterisk that a negative outlook attaches to a rating.

AM Best has removed the negative outlook on Farm Bureau Property & Casualty Group. The agency on Sept. 9 revised the group's outlooks to stable from negative and affirmed its A (Excellent) financial strength rating and “a” (Excellent) long-term issuer credit ratings, an action that covers members of the group.

Stable after negative is not an upgrade; it is a change in the forward assumption. The A was affirmed, not cut, so the rating itself was not the contested item in this action. What moved was AM Best's expectation: a downgrade is no longer the base case, and the agency has chosen not to carry the warning forward.

Farm Bureau P&C keeps its A and loses the asterisk that a negative outlook attaches to a rating. For agents, reinsurers and counterparties, that changes the direction of the conversation more than the group's standing today. A rating is a current snapshot; an outlook is a statement about where the agency expects to move next. This one says the next move is not down.

The burden now sits with the group's own results. AM Best will test the stable outlook against underwriting and reserve development in the quarters ahead, and for a property/casualty group, the evidence shows up in the numbers, not in the agency's language.
