AM Best upgrades The Doctors Company to A+, aa-

The upgrade follows the group's second-largest U.S. medical liability position and its 2026 ProAssurance acquisition.

At a glance

  1. The group is the second-largest U.S. medical professional liability writer, a position the June 2026 acquisition of ProAssurance Corporation strengthened, AM Best said.
  2. Balance sheet strength is strongest, with risk-adjusted capitalization at the strongest level on AM Best's BCAR measure.
  3. Surplus growth over the most recent five-year period came from underwriting and operating results.

AM Best upgraded The Doctors Company's financial strength rating to A+ (Superior) from A (Excellent) and its long-term issuer credit rating to “aa-” (Superior) from “a+” (Excellent) on Oct. 27, applying both to the Napa, California-based interinsurance exchange and its core subsidiaries.

The group is the second-largest U.S. medical professional liability writer, a position the June 2026 acquisition of ProAssurance Corporation strengthened, AM Best said. The business profile assessment was revised to favorable from neutral.

Balance sheet strength is strongest, with risk-adjusted capitalization at the strongest level on AM Best's BCAR measure. Enterprise risk management is appropriate.

Surplus growth over the most recent five-year period came from underwriting and operating results. Near term, AM Best expects the ProAssurance combination to slightly weaken underwriting performance, with significant net investment income sufficient to offset modest underwriting losses.

For advisors placing clients with an insurer, the upgrade puts The Doctors Company's balance sheet strength at the strongest level on AM Best's BCAR measure and its enterprise risk management as appropriate. The outlook was revised to stable from positive.
