Ameritas staffs both ends of the individual book

Two appointments thirteen days apart put product pricing and advisor-facing distribution under new leadership at the same time, a pairing that reads as a build for shelf space rather than a direct sales floor.

At a glance

  1. Nick Stremlau joined Aug. 10 as senior vice president, chief actuary and underwriting for the individual business, arriving from Assurity, where he was vice president and actuary in product management, while Shannon Berry's promotion to senior vice president, sales and distribution enablement took effect Aug. 23, thirteen days later.
  2. The jobs sit at opposite ends of the same book.
  3. Products priced on the actuarial side reach clients through registered channels, so the underwriter and the enablement executive work the same revenue line from opposite directions.

Ameritas announced the two officer appointments on Sept. 10, both already in effect, and they read as a single decision about how the carrier sells individual insurance.

The jobs sit at opposite ends of the same book. Stremlau's more than fifteen years of actuarial and strategic work across life, health and annuity products, plus a fellowship in the Society of Actuaries and membership in the American Academy of Actuaries, mark the pricing and risk-selection seat, the place where a product is made cheap enough and fast enough to survive a comparison; Berry's credentials run toward the market instead, with FINRA Series 7, 66 and 24 registrations alongside FLMI, CLU and CFP designations plus memberships in the Financial Planning Association and NAIFA. Distribution enablement at a carrier is the function that makes products legible to the people who recommend them, and those registrations suggest a role conducted through the registered side of the advisor relationship, though the announcement does not spell out the mandate.

Ameritas gives the pairing more weight than a two-line personnel notice would ordinarily carry: the mutual holding company, founded in 1887, holds a broker-dealer in Ameritas Investment Company and an RIA in Ameritas Advisory Services, and its product list runs from life insurance, annuities and individual disability income through retirement plans, asset management and public finance. Products priced on the actuarial side reach clients through registered channels, so the underwriter and the enablement executive work the same revenue line from opposite directions.

The recruiting contest, as this publication has argued, has moved from solo breakaways to block trades and employee-channel retention, and carriers sit upstream of that fight. The quieter version of it is a product war: when a team changes firms, the insurance and annuity shelf tends to travel with it, so the carrier whose pricing and support are already built for advisor distribution is positioned to make the trip. That is a bet on channel architecture, and it is the bet these appointments imply—a chief actuary for the individual line plus an enablement chief who holds planning designations is a company staffing for shelf space.

The test lands on the product side. A carrier that installs a chief actuary over a line is usually getting ready to put something in front of the people who sell it, so watch whether Ameritas' individual book broadens in annuities or disability income before the next selling season, and whether the enablement role grows registered headcount behind it.
