A ballistic strike on Kyiv left a data center owned by Ukrainian telecom Datagroup inoperable, the company said, Data Center Dynamics reported on Oct. 20.

The facility was hit overnight on Oct. 19; Datagroup called it 'completely disabled' and said restoration and further operation were impossible, with customers to be served from backup sites. Datagroup did not detail the site's capacity or customer count.

For allocators holding digital-infrastructure exposure, the useful question is what redundancy a portfolio company bought. A single-site outage in a conflict zone turns on business-interruption cover and the contractual ability to move clients to backup facilities. Ask the manager which sites, in which metros, and what the contracts require when one goes down.

The strike was part of a wider attack that destroyed a shopping and entertainment center in Kyiv and damaged a medical facility and a 25-story residential building, according to Data Center Dynamics. A 21-year-old woman was killed and eight others were injured, the Kyiv Post reported; no Datagroup employees were harmed.

A Ukrainian strike damaged a Russian tax data center 425km from Moscow, The Daily Network reported Oct. 23; the Nizhny Novgorod governor reported three injuries.
