BNY, Citadel Securities complete tokenized Treasury collateral transaction

BNY also says it expects to extend settlement hours for Federal Reserve-eligible securities and U.S. triparty transactions to European and Asian hours next year.

  1. CoinDesk, which reported the transaction, described BNY as the world's largest custody bank and Citadel Securities as a trading giant.
  2. Banks and trading firms pledge U.S. government bonds to secure short-term loans and fund trading activity.
  3. Carolyn Weinberg, BNY's chief innovation and market transformation officer, said using a tokenized representation of a U.S. Treasury across both settlement and financing enables a more connected and always-on financial system.

BNY and Citadel Securities said Tuesday they completed a transaction using tokenized U.S. Treasuries. CoinDesk, which reported the transaction, described BNY as the world's largest custody bank and Citadel Securities as a trading giant. The two firms framed the transfer as a demonstration that tokenized government bonds can move from settlement into financing, letting firms reuse collateral sooner and free up cash for other trades.

Collateral is the point. Banks and trading firms pledge U.S. government bonds to secure short-term loans and fund trading activity. Moving those bonds between accounts and settlement systems takes time, tying up assets that could otherwise be put to work.

"Efficient movement of high-quality collateral is fundamental to well-functioning markets," said Dan Doherty, digital assets operations lead at Citadel Securities, in a statement. He said that cutting delays across the trade lifecycle could improve how institutional markets operate. Carolyn Weinberg, BNY's chief innovation and market transformation officer, said using a tokenized representation of a U.S. Treasury across both settlement and financing enables a more connected and always-on financial system.

BNY said it plans to introduce more digital cash and tokenized deposit capabilities to support blockchain-based settlement and financing. It also said it expects to extend the operating hours of its traditional settlement systems for Federal Reserve-eligible securities and U.S. triparty transactions, aiming to reach European and Asian trading hours next year. Triparty transactions are a form of short-term financing in which a bank manages collateral between borrowers and lenders.

The transaction arrives as Wall Street explores moving traditional assets onto blockchains. BlackRock, Franklin Templeton and JPMorgan are among the firms that have embraced tokenized funds and securities, betting the technology can shorten settlement times, automate processes and make assets easier to move, according to CoinDesk. The report does not say how large the transaction was, which settlement system carried it, or whether the firms intend to run similar transfers in production. One completed transfer shows the mechanics working end to end; it does not establish volume running through them.
