CFP Board sanctions 19 individuals under its Code and Standards

The October 2 notice names one suspended certification and points readers to FINRA and SEC records that may be more current than the board's own listing.

At a glance

  1. The Washington nonprofit, which counts more than 110,000 CFP professionals, opened its case list with William Raines Welden of Vestavia, Alabama, whose certification and right to use the CFP marks were suspended by the Disciplinary and Ethics Commission in July 2026.
  2. The reach of those sanctions is narrower than the phrase "nineteen actions" suggests, and the release is careful about saying so: the board is not a federal regulator, a state regulator, or a self-regulatory organization, and it does not sanction financial services firms.
  3. For a firm, a discipline notice is a diligence input rather than a news item, and this release usefully maps where the records sit.

The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards announced on October 2 that it had sanctioned 19 individuals for failing to uphold the Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct that CFP professionals agree to follow. The Washington nonprofit, which counts more than 110,000 CFP professionals, opened its case list with William Raines Welden of Vestavia, Alabama, whose certification and right to use the CFP marks were suspended by the Disciplinary and Ethics Commission in July 2026.

The reach of those sanctions is narrower than the phrase "nineteen actions" suggests, and the release is careful about saying so: the board is not a federal regulator, a state regulator, or a self-regulatory organization, and it does not sanction financial services firms. Its authority runs to the mark and to the person holding it. The same release describes Fitness Standards used to weigh the ethical fitness of certification candidates and former certificants seeking reinstatement, a process that reaches applicants who are not yet holders.

Where the records actually sit

For a firm, a discipline notice is a diligence input rather than a news item, and this release usefully maps where the records sit. The board's verification page shows certification status; FINRA's BrokerCheck and the SEC's Investment Adviser Public Disclosure database cover individuals under those bodies' oversight because those sources may be more recent or may contain information that never led to board discipline and therefore does not appear on the board's site.

The board frames the notice as maintenance of the mark as much as protection of the client: certification, the release says, is not a guarantee of a professional's services but a commitment the board may enforce. That suggests firms advertising certification density on their advisor rosters are borrowing the board's enforcement credibility along with the credential.

The notice sits alongside two earlier items. In August this publication described the board's rollover guidance as a step that turns fiduciary duty into a documented process, and on September 30 it reported that the SEC is asking whether a CFP credential should by itself qualify an individual as an accredited investor. Both treat the mark as a gatekeeping device, and a published sanction list is part of what gives the gate weight. What the October 2 release does not supply is any comparison with earlier notice periods, so 19 functions as a single count rather than a rate, and the only case it names is a suspension ordered in July and disclosed in October.
