Circle rents the credit book and keeps the mint

A $14.3 million market is small; the split that produced it is the part worth copying.

At a glance

  1. The Arc market shows the scale: $14.3 million of USDC borrowed against 287 cirBTC, the bitcoin wrapper Circle issues, up from $1.37 million on Sept. 17, as The Defiant reported.
  2. For a business whose revenue tracks USDC in circulation, that growth rate is the strategy: a borrower who posts bitcoin instead of selling it leaves the coin in place and takes dollars that have to be minted, and Circle is paid on the mint.
  3. Arc was targeted to open to public use on Sept. 16, with eleven founding institutions still controlling block production; the earliest figure in The Defiant's account is dated Sept. 17, the day after.

Nearly all the dollars behind Circle's new bitcoin lending market come from Galaxy and Keyrock, the loan terms sit with Morpho, and Circle keeps the wrapper and the wallet — a split that is the product. The Arc market shows the scale: $14.3 million of USDC borrowed against 287 cirBTC, the bitcoin wrapper Circle issues, up from $1.37 million on Sept. 17, as The Defiant reported. Across those 287 coins, the market works out to roughly $49,800 of USDC drawn against each coin, a tenfold expansion in the four days after Sept. 17.

For a business whose revenue tracks USDC in circulation, that growth rate is the strategy: a borrower who posts bitcoin instead of selling it leaves the coin in place and takes dollars that have to be minted, and Circle is paid on the mint.

Arc was targeted to open to public use on Sept. 16, with eleven founding institutions still controlling block production; the earliest figure in The Defiant's account is dated Sept. 17, the day after. Whether the lending market predates the public mainnet, the coverage does not say. The clients who already mint USDC on Circle's platform now have a way to borrow against bitcoin, and the borrowing happens on the ledger Circle controls.

When the capability was payments, Circle went the other way: as our Sept. 10 reporting put it, the firm paid nine times more in stock to buy stablecoin payment capability outright than Oak HC/FT is putting into the same capability. Here it bought nothing and rented the credit decision, which for a business paid on float is the better trade: the loan terms stay with Morpho and the two firms supplying dollars, while Circle keeps the mint and the wrapper.

The next crop of tokenized products, the argument ran, would come from existing issuers reusing current documentation rather than new wrappers, and cirBTC is a new wrapper, which cuts against that. But it is also 287 coins, a size at which the wrapper itself is beside the point; what matters is where it sits, inside the mint and on Arc.

Watch the draw per cirBTC, near $50,000 today. It climbs if clients start levering rather than funding working capital against bitcoin they will not sell, and 287 coins is thin enough that a handful of borrowers could move it in either direction. Nearly all the dollars behind it come from two firms, a concentration the coverage notes but does not price.
