Continent 8 opens first Africa data center in Johannesburg, adds New York site

The iGaming hosting provider has not disclosed the Johannesburg location or a colocation partner; its Tioga Downs facility reportedly offers 24 racks.

At a glance

  1. Data Center Dynamics, which reported both builds, dates the African announcement to September 30.
  2. The Johannesburg site connects directly into Continent 8's private global network, which the company puts at more than 100 locations, and is meant to let customers serve South African players with lower latency and more consistent service.
  3. Johannesburg is South Africa's largest data center market, already home to NTT Data, NexAxis, Digital Realty, Africa Data Centres, Equinix, Vantage and Teraco.

Continent 8 Technologies has launched a data center in Johannesburg, its first facility on the African continent, without disclosing the site's location or a colocation partner, and added a second at the Tioga Downs Casino Resort in Nichols, New York. Data Center Dynamics, which reported both builds, dates the African announcement to September 30.

The Johannesburg site connects directly into Continent 8's private global network, which the company puts at more than 100 locations, and is meant to let customers serve South African players with lower latency and more consistent service. Continent 8 sells managed hosting and cloud to iGaming and online sports betting operators, whose footprints are set by where licences exist at least as much as by where traffic is densest. Chief executive Mike Small called the move "a natural next step in our global growth strategy," while Justin Cosnett, the company's chief product officer, told DCD that site selection follows "where the vertical takes us, and locations are needed for regulatory purposes."

Johannesburg is South Africa's largest data center market, already home to NTT Data, NexAxis, Digital Realty, Africa Data Centres, Equinix, Vantage and Teraco. That leaves open whether Continent 8 is leasing space inside an incumbent campus or running its own — the difference in who carries the land, power and permitting risk, and in what the launch cost.

The New York build is easier to size: the facility at Tioga Downs reportedly offers roughly 500kW of capacity and 24 racks, with room to reach 48, at a 160-room casino with 890 slot machines, 28 table games and a poker room. Half a megawatt across two dozen racks is a venue-scale deployment, latency-bound and sitting on the property it serves. This publication has argued that capital now prices anchor tenants rather than buildings, which puts a casino-edge site and an undisclosed Johannesburg launch outside the tier where infrastructure pricing is being set; these are underwritten by what operators will pay for a regulated, low-latency node, not by a long lease from a credit tenant.

The reports do not say how much capacity Continent 8 intends to add in Johannesburg or what it is spending to get there. The only disclosed headroom is at Tioga Downs, where 24 racks can become 48 — the company's own figure for how much room the casino property has left.
