The standard is voluntary and covers bonds aligned with the EU Taxonomy. Because the figure measures take-up of a particular label, the €39 billion is not a total for European green bond supply.

Broader investment figures

The Commission also says more than €1.2 trillion has been invested in sustainable activities since 2021, including more than €320 billion in 2025 in activities aligned with the EU Taxonomy. Energy accounted for the largest share, driven mainly by electricity providers.

ESG News reported that the release did not describe the methodology used to calculate the investment and issuance figures.

The 2026 issuance window stops at 7 October, leaving almost three months of the year uncounted.
