Leveraged loan sentiment sours as February tariff worries bite

Secondary prices tumbled and opportunistic borrowers pulled back even as new-issue spreads held near decade tights.

At a glance

  1. Tariff worries, equity-market swings and a less certain growth outlook dragged secondary prices down, opportunistic borrowing faded, and a handful of deals were pulled from syndication, according to PitchBook LCD's Marina Lukatsky, writing in the Morningstar LSTA Leveraged Loan Index analysis.
  2. New-issue spreads still sit near their tightest levels in more than a decade.
  3. For private-credit managers, February is a reminder that the syndicated loan market can close on headline risk alone.

February curdled the leveraged loan market's mood.

New-issue spreads still sit near their tightest levels in more than a decade. When secondary prices slip while primary pricing stays that firm, the technical picture has usually turned more balanced, not distressed. The analysis notes that balance shifted last month.

For private-credit managers, February is a reminder that the syndicated loan market can close on headline risk alone. The pulled deals show how quickly borrowers lose the option to refinance or upsize. Direct lenders do not face daily repricing, yet the month's caution carries a lesson: when public loan buyers turn picky, demand for certainty tends to rise.

None of this amounts to a rout. Spreads at decade tights describe a functioning market; February is a mood shift, and in credit the sharpest moves often start with mood before any model catches up.
