MoonPay builds a shelf of tokenized funds and keeps the leverage

Two of the larger managers in tokenized government paper have now plugged into the same app, and the reserve share neither firm named is what sizes the deal.

At a glance

  1. MoonPay will build an access point inside its consumer app where eligible U.S. investors can buy shares of the WisdomTree Treasury Money Market Digital Fund, ticker WTGXX, and it will fold that same fund into the reserves behind its stablecoins.
  2. The arrangement splits into two businesses.
  3. WTGXX held $1.23 billion on Friday, the fifth-largest tokenized Treasury product and the largest of WisdomTree's seven tokenized funds, according to rwa.xyz, while the complex's $1.2 billion total sits below the $2.7 billion Securitize and Ondo each hold, Circle's $2.6 billion, and Franklin Templeton's $2.5 billion in a $15.40 billion tokenized Treasury market.

The part of the WisdomTree-MoonPay deal that will move money is the one that arrives without a stated number. MoonPay will build an access point inside its consumer app where eligible U.S. investors can buy shares of the WisdomTree Treasury Money Market Digital Fund, ticker WTGXX, and it will fold that same fund into the reserves behind its stablecoins. No launch date was given for either piece.

The arrangement splits into two businesses. A distribution route sends a registered U.S. money market fund through a crypto app rather than a broker-dealer, adding MoonPay to a list where WisdomTree's Connect platform and direct broker-dealer channels already sell WTGXX. The second leg touches the balance sheet, moving stablecoin cash backing out of bank deposits and bills held at a custodian and into shares recorded onchain.

Neither firm said what share of reserves the fund would hold, or which stablecoin products it would sit behind, so the half of the deal with a direct balance-sheet effect arrives unquantified.

WisdomTree cannot buy its way up that table with its own balance sheet, so it is renting reach instead: MoonPay's network spans more than 35 million accounts and more than 1,700 enterprise partners.

The second wiring

MoonPay has run this play before: in June it wired Franklin Templeton's BENJI, a tokenized U.S. government money market fund, into MoonPay Trade for stablecoin-to-fund swaps aimed at institutional users moving between stablecoins and fund shares, as The Defiant reported at the time. That was distribution, and the WisdomTree arrangement layers a reserve-management use on top of it. Two of the larger managers in tokenized government paper have now plugged into the same consumer app, the coverage does not say either has exclusivity, and the funds are likely bidding for a slot rather than holding one—so MoonPay gains a stronger hand as a buyer of reserves and becomes a harder counterparty for any issuer counting on the app as distribution.

WisdomTree founder and chief executive Jonathan Steinberg cast the arrangement as reach. "Money moves differently today, and investing needs to keep pace," he said. "Stablecoins are reshaping how people and businesses both hold and move value, and working with MoonPay as an access point can give eligible U.S. investors another path to deploy their assets into WTGXX." Caroline D. Pham, chief executive of MoonPay Institutional, said the work "demonstrates how financial innovation can enable better experiences for investors in U.S. regulated markets and products."

Pham was acting chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission before she joined MoonPay, and the unit she now runs was assembled in April, when the company folded the MPC custody firm Sodot into a new institutional platform—a hiring history that suggests an institutional arm built for regulated products and the conversations that trail them, which is the same posture the fund access point takes toward U.S. retail.

Where the wrapper stops deciding

Tokenized government paper has become a commodity at the top of the table, where four issuers sit at $2.5 billion or more selling the same underlying exposure—short-dated Treasuries with a recorded owner—so the wrapper decides less than the channel does. That reframes what this announcement is worth. A retail access point moves shares one investor at a time and has to be re-won with every marketing dollar. A reserve stack is recurring demand that arrives in size and stays until the mandate moves. If MoonPay routes even a modest slice of its stablecoin backing into WTGXX, it would likely shift the fund's assets more than the app's shoppers will in the near term, and the firm would be under no obligation to keep it there.

The access point also tests whether a consumer app can move a registered money market fund without the brokerage layer that normally carries one. If it can, the route opens to any manager with a tokenized share class and a partner app, and the brokerage channel that has carried retail cash faces a new competitor for the same dollars—a claim larger than any single fund's assets, and the part worth watching quarterly.

Tokenization's real fight is collateral and exits, not issuance, and this deal shows how literal that is: a stablecoin's reserve is the asset standing behind the token, so moving that reserve into onchain-recorded fund shares changes who can verify the backing more than it changes the risk in it. Tokenized-lending reporting has shown the collateral question does not stop at government paper, and Securitize's first public report showed tokenized assets can set records while the fees attached to them shrink. Both apply to a reserve stack: it can grow without the wrapper earning much, and without touching the exit question—what happens when a large holder wants cash out and the path runs through a fund with its own settlement cycle. Treasury's first rulemaking under the GENIUS Act sets definitions and a comment schedule that will determine which issuers face U.S. rules, so the compliance shape of a reserve arrangement like this one is unsettled too.

What remains unnamed is what sizes it: a launch date and the share of MoonPay's reserves the fund will hold. WisdomTree holds an option on MoonPay's distribution, and the number that would price it—a slice of the stablecoin reserve position—neither firm has put on the page.
