At a glance

  1. The nine-month total is €5.7 billion, leaving about €900 million for the fourth quarter.
  2. Munich Re cut written volume at every 2026 renewal round, declining business that did not meet its return thresholds: 9.1% at July, when risk-adjusted prices fell 5.5%, after 18.5% at April.
  3. For an ILS manager pricing cat bonds or retro at that renewal, the reference is a market where a reinsurer of Munich Re's size is cutting volume and the benchmark is still falling.

Munich Re raised its 2026 net profit guidance to €6.6 billion from €6.3 billion after preliminary third-quarter profit of about €1.7 billion beat the €1.479 billion mean analyst consensus cited in the company's announcement.

The nine-month total is €5.7 billion, leaving about €900 million for the fourth quarter. Full third-quarter figures are due Nov. 12. Munich Re said the quarter was driven by major losses running below average expectations in property-casualty reinsurance, the same dynamic behind a €2.2 billion second quarter and a €1.7 billion first quarter.

Munich Re cut written volume at every 2026 renewal round, declining business that did not meet its return thresholds: 9.1% at July, when risk-adjusted prices fell 5.5%, after 18.5% at April. The Guy Carpenter global property catastrophe rate-on-line index fell 16% across 2026. Fitch's Global Reinsurance Monitor: Mid-Year 2026 expects pricing to soften further and terms to loosen at the January 2027 renewals, with excess reinsurance supply outpacing modest demand growth.

For an ILS manager pricing cat bonds or retro at that renewal, the reference is a market where a reinsurer of Munich Re's size is cutting volume and the benchmark is still falling. Withdrawal at this scale has not been enough to hold price.

Part of the improvement comes from the loss account rather than price. In the third quarter of 2025, P&C reinsurance major-loss expenditure reached €1.336 billion: €1.137 billion from natural catastrophes in the US, Canada and central and eastern Europe, and €199 million from man-made events. The catastrophe environment through three quarters of 2026 has been markedly calmer than that, the company said.

The group cut its insurance revenue target twice this year, to €62 billion from €64 billion overall and to €38 billion from €40 billion in reinsurance. Investment income helped: the second-quarter investment result was €3.16 billion, up from €2.19 billion a year earlier. Sector-wide, non-life reinsurance net premiums written fell 6% in the first half of 2026, according to Fitch's monitor.

Munich Re's version of discipline has been to write less rather than to hold price, and the calm is when the discipline erodes. The next checkpoint is Nov. 12, when the full third-quarter figures land; the larger one is January, when Fitch expects terms to loosen again and Munich Re decides how much of that market it wants.
