Plug Power said to drop 100-MW Antwerp green hydrogen project

A reported 100-MW cancellation makes plain that green hydrogen economics run on offtake contracts.

At a glance

  1. The planned scale was 100 MW of electricity input — commercial, not pilot.
  2. For desks watching transition capital, the useful read is the offtake problem.
  3. The item lands in a week when the policy picture for clean-energy infrastructure turned harsher.

On Aug. 20, Renewables Now reported that Plug Power has dropped its Antwerp green hydrogen project. The planned scale was 100 MW of electricity input — commercial, not pilot. The outlet's headline hedges with "reportedly," and the story offers no company confirmation and no reason. A number that size needs a real offtake contract behind it to be financeable.

For desks watching transition capital, the useful read is the offtake problem. Green hydrogen still costs more than hydrogen made from fossil fuels, so a merchant plant without an anchor buyer is an open risk position. If the cancellation holds, Plug Power could not make the economics work at this site. That is inference, not something the report asserts.

The item lands in a week when the policy picture for clean-energy infrastructure turned harsher. Private Infrastructure Daily's coverage has tracked the DOE's cancellation of three transmission corridors. Neither event necessarily explains the other, but together they put a price on political support for large clean-energy projects.

The report doesn't say whether the 100-MW electrolyzer will move to another site or leave the pipeline. That distinction matters to investors: a relocation is a supply-chain story, a deletion is a demand signal. Until Plug Power or its partners clarify, the only certain number is the one in the headline — and it's negative.
