Sowell arms advisors with tax-and-estate planning group

The Arkansas RIA's Advanced Planning Group puts tax work at the center of estate and advanced planning for advisors on both platforms.

At a glance

  1. Founder and chief strategy officer Bill Sowell framed the launch around partnership, organic growth and what he called “truly differentiating resources” for advisors navigating client complexity.
  2. The group is co-led by two of the firm’s in-house specialists: Carrie Quraishi as director of advanced planning and JR Quraishi as director of tax planning.
  3. The launch arrives within months of Sowell’s creation of Cache River Private Wealth, the division set up earlier in 2026 to serve households with more than $5 million in net worth.

Sowell Management has launched an Advanced Planning Group that gives advisors on both the Sowell platform and the Cache River Private Wealth division estate, tax and other advanced planning support for affluent clients and business owners, Wealth Solutions Report first reported. Founder and chief strategy officer Bill Sowell framed the launch around partnership, organic growth and what he called “truly differentiating resources” for advisors navigating client complexity.

The group is co-led by two of the firm’s in-house specialists: Carrie Quraishi as director of advanced planning and JR Quraishi as director of tax planning. Carrie Quraishi said high-net-worth clients increasingly expect service once confined to family offices, and she pointed to business sales, liquidity events, succession planning and multi-generational wealth transfer as the moments where the group would show up. JR Quraishi’s piece is the tax overlay: identifying proactive planning opportunities and making sure tax strategies run through all of the group’s services, which the firm describes as an important feature for mitigating clients’ tax burdens.

The launch arrives within months of Sowell’s creation of Cache River Private Wealth, the division set up earlier in 2026 to serve households with more than $5 million in net worth. Making the group available to advisors on both platforms standardizes family-office-grade planning across two brands instead of building it brand by brand.

The tax overlay is the moat

Tax is the part that matters most. As this publication has argued, tax planning rather than investment selection is the durable advantage, and Sowell is now making that argument concrete with a dedicated service line. For a $5 million-plus household, a business sale or succession event is where the plan earns its keep; the advisor who can put a number on what the client kept, not merely what the portfolio returned, is the advisor who keeps the relationship. Putting JR Quraishi’s discipline at the center of the group is the right call because it converts estate planning from a documents exercise into a retention event.

The direction fits the wider push across the RIA industry, where planning resources are becoming the point of differentiation, and Sowell’s bet is that a shared advanced-planning group with a tax overlay built into everything it touches is worth more to advisors and wealthy clients than any platform upgrade. The coverage does not say how the group will be staffed or how advisors will be trained to route clients into it; adoption will decide whether this is a brochure or a working resource.
