State Street and Apex Clearing launch RIA custody unit for $1 billion-plus RIAs

State Street launched the service late last month, returning to a business it exited abruptly about five years ago; RIABiz reports divergent priorities between partners.

At a glance

  1. State Street, based in Boston, custodies $58 trillion in institutional assets, according to RIABiz.
  2. Will Trout, director of securities and investments at Boston consultancy Datos Insights, told RIABiz the combination has the makings of a 'dream' service: Apex's platform plus State Street's institutional breadth, with a promise not to jack up or bolt on fees.
  3. RIABiz says the partnership will be tested by the need for a 'frictionless' experience, because the two companies have two sets of priorities.

State Street and Apex Clearing have launched an RIA custody service for advisers managing more than $1 billion.

State Street launched the service late last month, returning to a business it exited about five years ago, RIABiz reports.

The pairing is unusual. State Street, based in Boston, custodies $58 trillion in institutional assets, according to RIABiz. Apex adds a cloud-native platform the report describes as retail in texture and AI-forward. State Street executive John Plansky and Apex CEO Bill Capuzzi lead the unit; RIABiz notes Capuzzi is tying his name to its success or failure.

Will Trout, director of securities and investments at Boston consultancy Datos Insights, told RIABiz the combination has the makings of a 'dream' service: Apex's platform plus State Street's institutional breadth, with a promise not to jack up or bolt on fees. RIABiz relays the pitch: global scale, real-time data and high-touch service create an operating advantage hard to replicate.

Divergent priorities

RIABiz says the partnership will be tested by the need for a 'frictionless' experience, because the two companies have two sets of priorities. The 'divergent segment priorities' suggest the partners may not rank client segments the same way.

RIABiz's Brooke's Note frames RIA custody as a business with a 'mushy middle': Schwab Advisor Services operates at high volume, Altruist is a low-volume specialist for now, and firms without a clear claim to fame try to be a bit of everything. The report also says Fidelity is pushing sub-$100 million RIAs out to concentrate on larger firms, and the new unit arrives after Pershing's Wove 'fell flat.'

For a principal at a $1 billion-plus RIA, the practical question is service capacity, not interface polish. A custodian courting large RIAs has to staff for them, and the sub-$100 million accounts RIABiz says Fidelity is shedding are not the target here. State Street's $58 trillion figure covers institutional assets, a different book from RIA custody, and how much of that reach becomes RIA service capacity is unconfirmed.

This publication's position is that platforms owning the client record recover pricing power lost at the account level. A joint venture between a clearing platform and an institutional custodian makes the ownership question concrete: the record and the cash spread sit inside a structure with two parents, so service levels and economics will likely be negotiated rather than directed.
