Strategy's bitcoin buys are now the residual of its preferred stack

Last week's filing sent $174 million to STRC repurchases and $75.7 million to bitcoin, and that ordering decides how much coin the corporate treasury category actually gets.

At a glance

  1. The Monday filing that disclosed the buy also lists $174 million of USD cash for repurchases of STRC and $57.4 million of the USD reserve for preferred dividends, which makes the coin purchase the smallest of the week's three capital calls and less than half the buyback.
  2. With the USD reserve at $5 billion and USD cash at $1 billion, the company's 846,000 bitcoin were acquired for $63.81 billion at an average of $74,417 a coin, a blended cost roughly $10,000 below the $84,500 at which bitcoin traded when the filing surfaced Monday.
  3. Since the last purchase, the funding source has changed: August's restart came to $369.7 million, financed by selling MSTR stock and paired with preferred buybacks.

Strategy bought 950 bitcoin for $75.7 million last week at an average price of $79,670 a coin, its first purchase since late August. The Monday filing that disclosed the buy also lists $174 million of USD cash for repurchases of STRC and $57.4 million of the USD reserve for preferred dividends, which makes the coin purchase the smallest of the week's three capital calls and less than half the buyback.

At $79,670, last week's coins cost above that blended average, nudging the average up rather than down, and 950 coins is about a tenth of a percent of the stack, while MSTR shares rose 7% in pre-market trading as bitcoin gained 4.5% over the prior 24 hours.

Since the last purchase, the funding source has changed: August's restart came to $369.7 million, financed by selling MSTR stock and paired with preferred buybacks. Last week's buy is roughly a fifth of that, and the filing points at reserve and cash rather than an equity sale. Buying out of the reserve scales with what the board has carved out for preferred obligations; buying out of the equity window scales with MSTR's multiple, and the two do not move together.

Those three flat weeks matter more to the category than to the company: strip Strategy out and the corporate treasury bid vanishes, with one August purchase supplying 78% of public companies' bitcoin buys last quarter. A pause at the sector's dominant balance sheet is therefore very nearly a pause in the sector, and $75.7 million is what the marquee participant produces in a week when it is also feeding preferred holders.

The line that sets next quarter's coin demand is the buyback, not the BTC line. A $5 billion reserve that consumed $174 million of STRC repurchases and $57.4 million of preferred dividends in a single week leaves accumulation as the residual—a defensible order of operations for a company with a preferred stack to service, and a thin basis for reading every Strategy filing as fresh coin demand. The reserve balance in the next filing is the number that sizes this category's bid.
