Taiga manager sees historic Nordic small-cap valuation gap

Denmark is down more than 40% while Sweden, Finland and Norway are up 30% to 50%, he told HedgeNordic.

At a glance

  1. The regional market returned roughly 6% cumulatively over the past two years, a figure Wessel-Aas said masks the spread between countries and companies.
  2. For allocators, the dispersion argues against sizing or judging a Nordic small-cap allocation off a regional headline.
  3. Nordic small caps took longer than large caps to recover from what Wessel-Aas calls the frothy 2020-21 environment, regaining the lost ground only in 2026 and leaving a historic valuation gap to large caps, he said.

Denmark's equity market is down more than 40% while Sweden, Finland and Norway are up 30% to 50%, Ola Wessel-Aas, a portfolio manager at Taiga Fund Management, said in an interview HedgeNordic published Oct. 5.

The regional market returned roughly 6% cumulatively over the past two years, a figure Wessel-Aas said masks the spread between countries and companies. He attributed the dispersion to large-cap sector rotation and company-specific problems rooted in global themes, not to the underlying Nordic economies. "A single Nordic equity market has become a misnomer recently," he said.

For allocators, the dispersion argues against sizing or judging a Nordic small-cap allocation off a regional headline. The 40% move is a large-cap story, driven by a handful of Danish index heavyweights, while Nordic small caps have only just recovered ground lost since the 2020-21 period.

Small-cap recovery came only in 2026

Nordic small caps took longer than large caps to recover from what Wessel-Aas calls the frothy 2020-21 environment, regaining the lost ground only in 2026 and leaving a historic valuation gap to large caps, he said. That gap could matter more, he said, if lower rates, easier lending conditions and improving regional growth provide support.

Taiga, launched in May 2008, defines risk in the business rather than as tracking error. It assesses leverage, cyclicality, structural growth, operational leverage and earnings visibility case by case. "We invest only when risk/reward is strongly tilted in our favour," Wessel-Aas said. The fund pursues absolute, risk-adjusted returns rather than benchmark-relative performance, he said.
