Texas TRS's CIO search opens with the mandate already written

A $233.5 billion allocator wants a maintainer, which favors managers already inside its portfolio over anyone treating Jase Auby's retirement as an opening.

At a glance

  1. Auby joined in 2009 and held the deputy CIO, chief risk officer, and Risk Group leadership posts before taking the CIO chair in December 2019; he stays through the retirement date to support the transition while the board runs a nationwide search.
  2. The record he leaves is the pitch the board will make to candidates: TRS generated a 9.1 percent annualized return from Dec. 31, 2019 through June 30, 2026, 1.3 percentage points a year ahead of the trust's market benchmark and the strongest relative performance in fund history, the announcement says.
  3. What a successor inherits is visible only in outline — TRS reported $233.5 billion in total assets as of March 31, with $15.9 billion in infrastructure against a 6 percent allocation target, the sole alternatives figure the announcement discloses.

Jase Auby will retire as chief investment officer of the $233.5 billion Teacher Retirement System of Texas effective Jan. 31, 2027, closing out seven years in the top investment job and more than 17 years at the nation's sixth-largest public pension investment fund, the system announced. Auby joined in 2009 and held the deputy CIO, chief risk officer, and Risk Group leadership posts before taking the CIO chair in December 2019; he stays through the retirement date to support the transition while the board runs a nationwide search.

Auby told trustees at the September 2026 board meeting that the trust returned 16.5 percent for the twelve months ending June 30, 2026.

What a successor inherits is visible only in outline — TRS reported $233.5 billion in total assets as of March 31, with $15.9 billion in infrastructure against a 6 percent allocation target, the sole alternatives figure the announcement discloses. That leaves real estate managers tracking TRS as a counterparty with a leadership transition and no property-sector number attached, and the announcement names no successor and sets no timetable beyond the search itself.

The board framed the search as an investment leader with the experience and capabilities to build on TRS's strong foundation and guide it through its next chapter — a maintainer's brief rather than a reset's. A CIO vacancy at a $233.5 billion plan normally reads as an open door: a new decision-maker, a portfolio to re-underwrite, relationships to renegotiate. This one points the other way. Four months between the September announcement and the January handover is short for the national search the board describes, which suggests it expects a quick process, and the likely pattern for a new CIO's first year — more portfolio review than new commitments — works against anyone treating a vacancy as the moment to win business that a strong incumbent record kept in place.

The seat turns over Jan. 31, 2027, and managers who already hold TRS commitments are, by the board's own framing, the relationships a continuity hire is being asked to preserve.
