The marginal dollar is chasing megawatts

JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs are reportedly structuring $3 billion for Nscale while the deal log fills with power-generation transactions.

At a glance

  1. The same window is crowded with supply-side power transactions that show where the marginal institutional dollar is now pointed.
  2. The supply side arrived in exact numbers: $470 million from Smartenergy and Edisun Power, 65 MW from Vestas, and a Low Carbon announcement with no disclosed size.
  3. Set beside the $30 million Feathery raise for custodian-handoff automation and the $155 million WovenEarth Fund II launch, the supply-side deals are far larger.

JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs are reported to be structuring a $3 billion financing for Nscale, the AI data-center operator — the largest item on PWD's deal log over the past 48 hours, and still only deal talk. The same window is crowded with supply-side power transactions that show where the marginal institutional dollar is now pointed.

The supply side arrived in exact numbers: $470 million from Smartenergy and Edisun Power, 65 MW from Vestas, and a Low Carbon announcement with no disclosed size. A six-party arrangement ties Google, QTS, Meta, Amazon, AEP Ohio and SoftBank Energy together, and MUFG, Sprng Energy and Aditya Birla sit alongside them.

Set beside the $30 million Feathery raise for custodian-handoff automation and the $155 million WovenEarth Fund II launch, the supply-side deals are far larger. Feathery's product bet is real and WovenEarth gives its backers a defined pool, but both are small next to the electricity layer that powers AI data centers. The market has moved past underwriting data-center leases; it is now writing checks for the generation that powers them.

The durable trade is in generation, not leases, because a lease is only as good as the power contract behind it. The $470 million deal does more work than the $3 billion talk: it is announced, specific, and supply-side. If the next several quarters look like the last 48 hours, allocators still rotating out of power and into software are making the wrong bet.
