Thirteen syndicates started underwriting at Lloyd's on January 1, 2026, after seven began writing in 2025, according to Insurance Business America's account of Lloyd's 2025 annual report. The report logged more than 50 serious underwriting inquiries. Cyber reinsurer Envelop has in-principle approval to convert its special purpose arrangement into a full syndicate from January, which the outlet places in the market's 2027 pipeline.

Approved capital for 2026 is £36.2bn, up 7.4% from £33.7bn, a £2.5bn increase, according to Lloyd's capital briefing. The 2025 results showed gross written premium of £57.9bn, up 4.2%, profit of £10.6bn and a 22% return on capital. Chief executive Patrick Tiernan's results statement said returns had topped 20% for a third consecutive year. Lloyd's credited volume growth of 10.3% in 2025 to newcomers and established syndicates writing more.

Barclays' international corporate banking team published an analysis last week identifying three pull factors, according to Insurance Business America. Written by Gavin Westmoreland, the bank's head of UK insurance, it cites a Lloyd's that has modernised and tightened its underwriting standards, a wider investor base from private equity houses to wealthy individuals, and syndicate capital structures now complex enough to change what managing agents need from their banks.

Westmoreland credits steep rate rises in 2023 and 2024, property catastrophe in particular, for much of the market's profitability.

Barclays says a meaningful share of the new money is not simply duplicating existing capacity. Some new money transfers risk into Lloyd's from other markets. Some of it follows demand in growth lines such as cyber, where premium is rising faster than inflation. The bank says the softening is nonetheless real and accelerating.

Funding a syndicate gives private capital underwriting exposure without owning an insurer's balance sheet, a different route from insurance M&A. ICD reported in August that private equity's grip on insurance M&A hit a 10-year low, with strategics and public balance sheets taking deals sponsors once dominated.
