Trentar plans a $3bn renewables-powered data centre in India

The Oct. 6 report names the firm, country, dollar figure and power source, but no state, capacity, generation partner or offtaker.

At a glance

  1. Nothing in the item names a state or a site, a capacity in megawatts, a generation partner, an offtaker or a construction date, which leaves the commercial core of the project outside the report.
  2. Powered by renewables names a source without describing the arrangement that makes that source reliable, priced or bankable.
  3. Grid access is the new deal currency, and a project without a power path is a development option rather than an investment.

When Renewables Now reported on Oct. 6 that Trentar plans a $3 billion data centre in India powered by renewables, it delivered the whole of what the item contains: a firm, a country, a dollar figure and a power source. Nothing in the item names a state or a site, a capacity in megawatts, a generation partner, an offtaker or a construction date, which leaves the commercial core of the project outside the report.

Underwriting a campus at that scale begins with the load it is being built to serve and the power that will reach it, which makes the missing questions plain: where the site sits relative to transmission, how many megawatts of generation stand behind the renewables claim, and whether that generation is contracted to the campus or reconciled against a grid connection some other way. Powered by renewables names a source without describing the arrangement that makes that source reliable, priced or bankable.

The $3bn figure and the missing megawatts

Grid access is the new deal currency, and a project without a power path is a development option rather than an investment. The transition trade has split in two, with firm, dispatchable power and grids re-rating while pure renewables face margin compression, and which side of that split a renewables-powered campus sits on depends on the structure of its supply—the structure the report withholds. Consent rather than capital decides what gets built, and a project with no named jurisdiction offers no permitting track to assess.

The shape is familiar: this quarter PWD has covered a Texas hybrid park announced with partners and a state but no capacity, buyer or price, and a EUR5bn Masdar-Luxcara tie-up that disclosed no capacity, counterparty or structure, each arriving with a headline figure doing work a project description should do. The Trentar item follows the same form: an asset priced in the title and undescribed everywhere else.

Digital infrastructure currently trades in two markets, contracted anchor-backed assets at infrastructure pricing and merchant shells priced on promises, and the spread between them is the real underwriting line. A $3 billion data centre with no named load, no site and no supplier cannot yet be placed on either side of it. A state, a megawatt figure or an offtaker's signature would settle the question.
