WMO's strongest El Niño forecast tests 2027 cat pricing

Near-certain El Niño persistence through February 2027 puts the warmest-year baseline on the renewal calendar.

At a glance

  1. Already one of only four events to reach the top “very strong” bracket, the current El Niño has sample Pacific Ocean temperatures more than 2 degrees Celsius above normal.
  2. Secretary-General Celeste Saulo told a Geneva press conference the event may prove “stronger than anything since our monitoring began,” while the agency describes El Niño as a natural, periodic warming of the eastern Pacific that warmer oceans linked to fossil-fuel-driven climate change can intensify.
  3. The El Niño is set to peak toward the end of this year, with effects expected to extend through 2027, and climate chief Wilfran Moufouma Okia told reporters the year has “the potential to be the warmest on record.”

Carrier Management reports that the World Meteorological Organization sees a near-100% likelihood El Niño will persist through February 2027, and the agency says the event could become the strongest in records it has kept since 1950 — the first time it has attached that degree of certainty to an El Niño outlook. Already one of only four events to reach the top “very strong” bracket, the current El Niño has sample Pacific Ocean temperatures more than 2 degrees Celsius above normal. That forecast lands just as catastrophe bonds covering 2027 risk move toward pricing.

The current event has already hit soft commodities, causing a severe food crisis across Central America's Dry Corridor, an early indication that losses from this cycle will show up through typhoons, drought, and disrupted agriculture as much as in any single wind event.

The El Niño is set to peak toward the end of this year, with effects expected to extend through 2027, and climate chief Wilfran Moufouma Okia told reporters the year has “the potential to be the warmest on record.” For catastrophe bonds covering 2027 risk, the models being used over the coming months contain no event this strong, which leaves the gap between forecast and model as the number to watch.

The soft cycle of recent renewals was bought with strong returns, and the discipline question has always been whether terms would hold when a real test appeared — the WMO just supplied that test. Sponsors can price 2027 structures as if a record El Niño is one more tail case, or they can buy protection while the forecast is still a forecast. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calls the event “supersized before our eyes”; if the forecast verifies, the risk loading attached to 2027 cat bonds should be supersized with it.
