Five geared ETF launches, none from a leveraged-specialist house

Ultumus' 8 September roundup puts Harbor, AXS, Evolve, WisdomTree, and VanEck on the same shelf, and the roster says the wrapper is the product.

At a glance

  1. The issuers come from adjacent shelves rather than leveraged-specialist franchises: Harbor a commodities manager, AXS a general asset manager, Evolve a small independent, WisdomTree and VanEck houses whose fund families run well past gearing.
  2. A daily-reset product is a formula under a ticker, reproducible by anyone who can print a prospectus; what separates one from another afterwards is marketing spend and shelf placement.
  3. The most consequential line sits at the bottom of the page: single-company leveraged ETPs coming to London, billed by Ultumus as a world first.

Ultumus' 8 September 2022 ETF roundup puts five geared launches on one page, and the roster is the point: Harbor Capital, a Chicago fund manager, appears on energy-transition commodities; AXS Investments, a New York asset manager, is bringing single-stock leveraged and inverse products to the US; Evolve, a small Canadian independent, launched a mildly geared FANGMA ETF; WisdomTree added four more leveraged funds; and VanEck is launching a bitcoin miners ETF. The issuers come from adjacent shelves rather than leveraged-specialist franchises: Harbor a commodities manager, AXS a general asset manager, Evolve a small independent, WisdomTree and VanEck houses whose fund families run well past gearing. That mix says the category grows through distribution rather than design.

A daily-reset product is a formula under a ticker, reproducible by anyone who can print a prospectus; what separates one from another afterwards is marketing spend and shelf placement. This publication has argued the wrapper carries the economics, and in leveraged and inverse the wrapper is close to the entire product.

New York first, London next

The most consequential line sits at the bottom of the page: single-company leveraged ETPs coming to London, billed by Ultumus as a world first. The format has already been sold in the US, and the sequencing suggests the template travels: a new market adds a listing venue and a local distributor and little else. The roundup's keyword net is wide, catching Nuveen's ESG-screened junk bond ETF and Harbor's commodities item alongside the geared names, which is what one search term does to a product digest.

The VanEck filing is the one to hold to a standard. A miners ETF sells an equity index tied to a volatile commodity as though it were a theme, and the mining wrapper has been rewritten toward AI hosting: data-center power is where the index economics have migrated. A launch on the plain mining exposure buys the older half of that trade.

Keep the London line. If single-company leverage lists there, the same roster of adjacent-shelf issuers queues in every market that permits it, and the mild gearing Evolve chose, a multiple a distributor can defend to a gatekeeper, likely does more selling than the loudest one on the shelf.
