Five retirement-focused firms produce 341 market events, more than triple UBS's 97

Advisor moves across the industry totaled 2,180 in the same 30 days, alongside 363 fund launches and 736 announced deals.

At a glance

  1. The mix behind that total is as important as the number: advisor moves and fund launches, not acquisitions, put the plan-channel names on the board.
  2. RFG Advisory leads the individual ranking at 101, ahead of OpenArc Corporate Advisory at 98 and UBS at 97; Modern Wealth Management produced 87, MissionSquare Wealth Management 85, NewEdge Wealth 83, Kestra Private Wealth Services 77, and, level at 68, The Wealth Consulting Group and Frost Investment Services.
  3. Team liftouts, at 190, outnumber breakaways, 35, by more than five to one, which suggests most teams changing addresses are landing inside another firm's platform rather than setting up their own; custodian changes, at 22, are the quietest line in the month, and AUM changes, 156, run well below the pace of hiring.

Across the past 30 days, five retirement-focused firms produced 341 market events, led by MissionSquare Wealth Management at 85 and Frost Investment Services at 68, with MissionSquare Retirement at 64 and The Retirement Planning Group and Prime Capital Financial at 62 each — an average of 68 apiece across a 62-to-85 band, more than three and a half times UBS's 97. The mix behind that total is as important as the number: advisor moves and fund launches, not acquisitions, put the plan-channel names on the board.

The list closes with the retirement names — MissionSquare Retirement 64, The Retirement Planning Group 62, Prime Capital Financial 62 — and those five together account for 341 of the 952 events produced by the twelve busiest names, a little over a third of the top activity; MissionSquare's two lines add to 149, which would rank third if tallied as one.

Industrywide over the same 30 days, advisor moves totaled 2,180, nearly three times the 736 announced deals and more than the 1,324 announced and closed deals combined; fund launches reached 363, executive changes 437, and new registrations 121.

That mix points to firms building distribution rather than buying it, and the five plan-channel names sit at the top of a month defined by advisor movement and product launches. These counts measure activity, not assets; no AUM figures accompany any of the twelve names, and a large book having a quiet month leaves no trace here.

The wirehouse comparison flatters the five-firm group least. UBS's 97 makes it third-busiest on the list, running close to MissionSquare Wealth Management's 85 and roughly half again as fast as the retirement names at 64 and 62; the 341 rests on five firms in one channel moving at once.

The case for the plan channel as an advice frontier rests on the participant relationship, which reaches a household a generalist advisor would have to prospect for one at a time. Turning that proximity into revenue takes licensed advisors and products plans will buy, and both are built over quarters rather than bought in a single signing; headcount and registrations move before assets do, which is why a 30-day count can say more about where a firm is pointed than an AUM table does.

Dealmaking is not quiet — 736 announcements and 588 closings inside 30 days — and the top of the ranking is occupied by firms from outside the plan channel, so the retirement five are a top-twelve addition to a crowded month. Watch over the next 30 days whether MissionSquare Wealth Management closes its 12-event gap to UBS and whether the five-firm total clears 341.
