Florida declares state of emergency as Isaias expected to become hurricane in the Gulf

Hurricane watch covers Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, to Indian Pass, Florida; landfall possible late Friday or early Saturday.

At a glance

  1. The National Hurricane Center expects Isaias to reach hurricane strength on Thursday, which would make it the Atlantic basin's first hurricane of 2026.
  2. The NHC issued a hurricane watch Wednesday from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, to Indian Pass, Florida, meaning hurricane conditions are possible within 48 hours.
  3. The storm arrives after nine named storms and no hurricanes through early October.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency across 25 Panhandle and Big Bend counties as Tropical Storm Isaias, carrying 45 mph winds, moves toward the Gulf Coast. The National Hurricane Center expects Isaias to reach hurricane strength on Thursday, which would make it the Atlantic basin's first hurricane of 2026.

The NHC issued a hurricane watch Wednesday from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, to Indian Pass, Florida, meaning hurricane conditions are possible within 48 hours. Landfall is forecast for late Friday or early Saturday, and the agency says conditions over the Gulf support rapid intensification. Track and intensity remain subject to change.

The storm arrives after nine named storms and no hurricanes through early October. Accumulated cyclone energy stood at 10.9 through October 7, 89% below the 1991-2020 normal. If Isaias reaches hurricane strength Thursday, it would come close to the all-time record for the latest first Atlantic hurricane, set in 1905.

NOAA put the probability of a below-normal Atlantic season at 75% in August, forecasting seven to 13 named storms, two to six hurricanes and up to two major hurricanes, against an average of 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major. A strengthening El Niño, which increases vertical wind shear across the Atlantic, drove that call.

For insurers, the NHC forecast puts wind, storm surge, inland flood and business interruption exposure back in focus across a coastline with significant residential, commercial, energy and marine values. A quiet season so far does not by itself settle Atlantic pricing: this publication reported in September that wind capacity remains ample and the January renewal argument has moved to sublimits.
