Oil India reports 200,000 SCMD test flow offshore India

The Godavari-1 well tested a previously unexplored formation but no reserve estimate was given; India's $8.8 billion offshore scheme funds more drilling.

Oil India recorded a peak test flow of 200,000 standard cubic meters per day from its Godavari-1 appraisal well in the Krishna-Godavari Basin, the state explorer said Friday, Oct. 23.

The well tested the Matsyapuri formation, a previously unexplored formation in the shallow-water basin off India's east coast, OilPrice.com reported. Oil India gave no reserve estimate.

A flow rate describes what one interval produced during a test; it does not show how much gas is recoverable, what development would cost or what fiscal terms would apply. Without a reserve figure, investors have no basis to value the find.

The offshore scheme behind the drilling

India's National Offshore Exploration Scheme, launched this year with $8.8 billion in government support through FY 2030–31, is funding the drilling push, according to OilPrice.com. The program follows three consecutive years of declining domestic crude production in the world's third-largest crude importer.

The company said it is preparing to test the next zone in the basin for potential further drilling; a reserve estimate attached to that work would be the first figure allowing investors to value the find rather than a flow rate.
