What it does
Alto runs a self-directed IRA platform and marketplace that lets retirement accounts hold private credit, private equity, venture, real estate and infrastructure investments. It serves private wealth advisors, financial institutions that want to offer retirement-account investing on their own platforms, issuers raising capital, and individual investors. The company says it holds more than $2 billion in assets under custody.
For advisors, Alto offers a single workflow to set up the right IRA structure, fund private investments from client retirement accounts, and keep custody and compliance records in one place. Its Private Deal Room, launched for RIAs in August 2026, handles execution and custody for private deals an advisor or client brings, including those that traditional custodians will not hold. Alto Marketplace lists curated private offerings through Alto Securities, its broker-dealer. Enterprise clients can embed Alto's IRA funding inside their own platforms, as Canopy did in an October 2026 integration.
Alto describes itself as a self-directed IRA custodian, while the legal disclosure on its site calls Alto Solutions, Inc. an administrator of self-directed IRAs. Eric Satz founded Alto in 2015. It raised a $17 million Series A and a $40 million Series B in 2021 and sold its CryptoIRA business to Public.com in 2025. In October 2026 Alto signed a deal to buy Forge Trust from Charles Schwab. Alto publishes IRA pricing: a quarterly account fee of $37.50 or $100 based on invested capital, plus per-transaction service fees.
