Tavion raised $58 million in equity and debt for its first Polish battery storage projects

Construction began October 8 at a Bydgoszcz site with 20 MW of grid connection capacity and 40 MWh of storage.

At a glance

  1. Construction began October 8 in Bydgoszcz, six months after the company launched operations.
  2. The Bydgoszcz facility will have 20 MW of grid connection capacity and 40 MWh of installed storage in a two-hour configuration, allowing it to discharge at full capacity for about two hours.
  3. A second facility in Luboń is scheduled to break ground within two weeks, and a third project is expected to follow, according to the report.

Swedish developer Tavion raised about $58 million in equity and debt in September to fund its first battery storage projects in Poland, ESG News reported. Construction began October 8 in Bydgoszcz, six months after the company launched operations.

The Bydgoszcz facility will have 20 MW of grid connection capacity and 40 MWh of installed storage in a two-hour configuration, allowing it to discharge at full capacity for about two hours. It will connect to a distribution network operated by Enea Operator, with Esix Polska as balance-of-plant contractor.

A second facility in Luboń is scheduled to break ground within two weeks, and a third project is expected to follow, according to the report. It does not give capacity figures for either.

The report also does not name the lenders or split the $58 million between equity and debt, and it does not say how much capital each site receives. With only Bydgoszcz's 40 MWh disclosed, the $58 million cannot be converted into a cost per megawatt-hour across the portfolio.

ESG News frames the projects as addressing Poland's need for electricity system flexibility as renewable generation expands and the country reduces its reliance on coal, and reports that operational battery storage infrastructure there remains limited. That gap, in the report's account, is what makes development readiness valuable: securing land, grid access and permits ahead of the financing close is described as shortening the distance between committed capital and operating revenue.

Emad Zand, Tavion's chief executive, said: "We had land, grid connection and permits in place before the financing closed, which is why we can start two projects at once rather than one after another. Poland needs more flexibility in its grid now, and every month we save on the way to operation counts."
